Puma Son of Mountain Lion is a half-Indian boy who is away from the village undergoing the rites of manhood. When he returns, he finds his village destroyed by a warring tribe and his family slain. His mother dies in his arms and her last words are "Go find your father." Puma finds his father in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His father welcomes him with open arms and trains him in the white man's ways. He is educated in the East and goes to West Point and becomes a cavalry officer and placed in command of a troop charged with protecting a wagon train. In Santa Fe, he is directed to prevent white outlaw bands from taking the land that belongs to the early settlers and must also fight off renegade Apaches.
A war is developing between the North and South, and he is concerned that it will destroy his father's families. A war is also brewing in the West, and he does not want to be fighting against his own people. He is deeply torn about where his loyalties lie.

Puma took right off from Sagebrush. Puma is a young half breed Indian while doing the test of manhood for his tribe and he is away his tribe is killed by the Apaches. His mother in her die-ing breath asks Puma to find his father and go live with him, which he does. The rest of the story is of Puma growing up under his father's supervision and becoming the man that both his mother and father are proud. There is a lot of situations that put him into danger, but he handles them like he has been trained to do. I had never read any of William Wayne Dicksion's books before Sagebrush, but immediately ordered Puma, and and now getting ready to start a new book by him "Danny". I like the way he writes and makes his stories flow. I would highly recommend both Sagebrush and Puma Son of Mountain Lion. EnjoyProduct details

This is the second book I have read by this author. I enjoyed both. Will buy others written by him.
You will need to read Sagebrush first as this one is a sequel to it.
This book was very enjoyable reading and found it some what an educational experience. There is not a lot that he could add to my lessons from reading the writing of Louis Lemour, but Mr. Dicksion put in a few interesting details. I think by getting to the relationships of the family's he effective in making his story one distinct from the best of the others I have read.
I had thought Sagebrush was my favorite book by William Dicksion, but now it is Puma or at least a tie for favorite. I am hoping there is already a book published about Puma's middle age life in California. What I like best is the author is a wonderful storyteller with good down to earth values.
My first sentence says it all. The only thing I would change would be the length of the story. I would have liked to have had Mr Dickinson expound more on some of historical things he touched upon, but then we can't have everything. Looking forward to reading more from Mr Dickinson.
I enjoyed this book very much. It points out the strife in this country as it was being settled. Puma was a delightful young man who solved problems wherever he traveled.
The story line was original and well thought out. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the writer didn't always add depth to the actions taking place. He obviously spent time researching because of the details of the history used in the story & how items were made or things were done during that time period but when writing the actual story line it was like it skimmed across the top of the researched details (but the details weren't so deep as to make the story boring, just interesting). I'm not sure I'm describing it well, but I do recommend the book and it's predecessor if you like stories set in the old west with Native Americans.
Puma - is an excellent continuation of the first book Sagebrush. Of course - a lot of things fall into place - too easily. The mother, Evening Star, shows him the right stuff at the right time. He masters things at the right time. He finds Pat at the right time - well you get the picture. However, having said that - it is still a good story line. It move the history line along fairly well continuing the story of Sage his father along quite well. To move the story along, there are jumps in years, and assumptions. That's okay, tho.
While it's kind of historical fiction in nature, a little overly simplistic in areas. But still a fast moving book. Actually, by the time I got to the end, I immediately went back to hoping there was a 3rd book to the series - but no luck (at this point in time).
Overall, I enjoyed the pair of books together - for a fast, quick, light, read.
